Jumanji: Welcome to The Jungle is a sequel of the 1995 film Jumanji and it stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Bobby Cannavale and Nick Jonas. It is set 20 years after the first film and it follows four high school students who discover an old video game during detention and are drawn into the game's jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. They find out that they have three lives and must play the game and survive it to get back home, to the real world. They go on dangerous adventures and have to fight off the evil explorer, Van Pelt and his henchmen on their way. They also find Alex Vreek who has been stuck in the game for 20 years and together they have to come up with a plan to finish or be stuck in the game forever.

I’ll confess, I didn’t think much of Jumanji before going into the movie theater but I was pleasantly surprised by the way it turned out. The plot doesn’t take itself too seriously and the humor is on point. Although, some of the lines were not really “laugh-out-loud” worthy, but funny enough to make you smile, a lot. The film is very cheesy, stereotypical and predictable with the “school jock using a loner to do his assignments”, “the teenage love story and the “vain blonde girl” story arc but everything gets better once they arrive at the jungle. My favorite character had to be Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse. She is a ‘nerd within a sexy dance fighter’ and her comic attempts were really fun to watch. Her stunt double also delivers some amazing martial arts fight scenes. What I liked about this Adventure Comedy is the fact that their avatars are totally different from what they were in real life which made the movie fun. At the end, there was something about time travel that I really didn’t get but I just went along with it. I was a bit scared about how Jumanji would turn out but it ended up being a really enjoyable film. This isn’t an Oscar worthy film and if you’re looking for something serious, this isn’t the movie for you.
