With a screenplay from Bode Asinyabi and Directed by Niyi Akinmolayan, Chief Daddy tells the story of billionaire industrialist Chief Beecroft who’s second life is revealed after his death leading to a lot of family adjustments and a struggle for a large chunk of his estate.
In all honesty, I wasn’t expecting to be blown away by Chief Daddy but it was better than I expected it to be. I loved how each of the cast members brought their individual flavor to their roles with Falz, Joke Silva and Rachel Oniga as my favorites. The setting and costumes were beautiful and the story was not original and the execution could have been better. There were a lot of scenes that made me cringe especially the ones that involved Nedu and Chigul because they just seemed to do too much and the humor seemed forced. If there's anything as being guilty for having too many stars in one film then Chief Daddy should be thrown in movie jail because they had too many stars that could have easily been replaced with other actors. There were a few scenes that were quite funny and didn't seem forced especially scenes with Henshaw and Akindele and scenes with Owoh and Ozokwor. A lot of scenes were very unrealistic especially the first scene of Chief Daddy's death. He was found unconscious and only two of his staff are trying to resuscitate him while the others stand far watching as if they were by standers and witnesses at an accident scene instead of looking for help.
At the funeral party, the Driver basically interrupted the occasion with a host of other men and I couldn't stop wondering what society in Nigeria such a situation could occur. The whole caterer-and-decorator-not-being-paid-for-their-services scene was cringe worthy and not well thought out. It was very unnecessary and irrelevant to the plot. They did a sort of merging of the Ebony Life TV Series Castle and Castle and the movie with Mofe-Damijo and Akande reprising their roles as Tega and Remi Castle which suggests that they may be starting a Marvel-like Universe at Ebony Life. That would be very refreshing to see in Nollywood but I'm left wondering how they'll pull it off because the studio uses the same popular actors for most of their projects giving little or no room for the upcoming actors. The end of Chief Daddy indicated that there may be a sequel which will most likely hit theaters December 2019. I had a few laughs here and there but nothing really stood out with this film.
Cheif Daddy is still showing in cinemas nation wide.
