I was so excited when I found out that the sophomore season of Ryan Murphy's critically acclaimed anthology series was going to focus on the assassination of legendary designer Gianni Versace. Season one was amazing and I was sure this season wasn't going to be any different. I'll admit, it was a bit slow paced sometimes but I still enjoyed watching nonetheless. In my opinion, I think this was more of Andrew Cunanan's story, how he started killing and the people he murdered. I can't say it enough but Darren Criss deserves an Emmy for his role as Cunanan because he was phenomenal. There was obviously tension between Versace's partner Antonio and his sister, Donatella and we saw more of this in "Alone". The priest refused to acknowledge Antonio or even let Antonio touch him. All of this led to Antonio's suicide attempt which was pretty sad.
"Creator / Destroyer" directed by White Collar's Matt Bomer was honestly one of my favorite episodes. We got to see a young Cunanan, his family, how he grew up and what probably pushed him to the edge. Modesto Cunananan played by Jon Jon Briones was probably one of the reasons his son became so evil because he was such a terrible father who still tried to finesse his way into a movie deal about his son when Andrew was on the run. How horrible is that? In this finale, Andrew came face to face with the repercussions of the
bad decisions he had made. He knew it was the end and was ready to do
anything to make sure he doesn't get arrested by the police. It got more
real when he saw his father on TV saying terrible things. I think it
was at this moment that Andrew realized that he was truly "Alone". He
had no one and not even his father, the only man he looked up to was
willing to help him. According to the articles online, they got most of
the details surrounding the houseboat, Andrew's manhunt and his suicide
correct.
I'll admit, I loved the soundtrack especially the finale's. It was hauntingly beautiful. I love the fact that the season premiere and finale started the same way, with Versace getting shot by Andrew. As Ronnie said "Andrew is not hiding. He's trying to be seen". This was one of my best lines throughout the series. Andrew was trying to be seen. He wanted to be famous and leave a legacy behind. After he shot Versace, you could see that he was happy with what he did and when the helicopter hovered above the house boat, he laid on the deck chair with a bottle of champagne looking so fulfilled. He was happy that he was finally a celebrity but he was devastated by his father's interview and eventually broke. Cunanan looked in the mirror and realized that it was over. He put the gun directly into his mouth and pulled the trigger.
This was honestly a very gripping show, especially the episodes that depicted Jeff Trail and David Madon's murders. Ryan Murphy brought it again and I can't wait for season three which will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
