I consider Benendict Cumberbatch as one of my favorite actors so I was so excited when it was announced that he would play the very troubled titular character of Showtime's Patrick Melrose. Cumberbatch is a phenomenal actor and I knew he was going to be superb in this role. There's just something about him and the characters he plays and I'm not ashamed to say I'm a bit obsessed with the Sherlock actor. The five-part mini-series based on the acclaimed novels by Edward
St. Aubyn tracks Patrick from a privileged but deeply traumatic
childhood in the South of France through severe substance abuse in his
twenties in New York and, ultimately, toward recovery back home in
Britain. I couldn't think of anyone more fit to play this role than Cumberbatch. It was intense, funny and filled with a lot of emotion. Patrick has regular mood swings and through flash backs we see that he was abused by his father when he was much younger. He was an addict and within the first hour, pumped himself of heroine, cocaine and quaaludes. He also spends time speaking to himself and responding to the voices in his head, sometimes in a very loud way which frightens the people around him.
The funniest scene had to be when the quaaludes kicked in and he literally collapses and drags himself across the room just like Leonardo DiCaprio in Wolf of Wall Street. Cumberbatch would laugh, scream, cry, and have a bunch of emotions at the same time and it was just amazing to watch. The supporting cast also does an amazing job but it was really Cumberbatch that held the episode together. It was his show and he delivered on every level. The dialogue is superb, the acting is on point and everything about the show is brilliant. Patrick is on a path to self destruction with his heroine and alcohol addiction and in the coming episodes, we'll get to see how he handles his sobriety. I can already see the Emmy nominations coming in for Cumberbatch and it's definetely going to be on a lot of 'Best Show' lists this year, including mine. Each episode is going to focus on one of the five Patrick Melrose novels and follows the character through different era's in his life. A new episode airs next Saturday.
