Binge Worthy: Margaret Atwood's Alias Grace

Image via imdb.com    Alias Grace is based on the Margaret Atwood 1996 Historical Fiction novel of the same name about Grace Marks (Sarah Gadon), a young girl who emigrated from Ireland to Canada with her family in the early 19th Century. It's a fictionalized version of the 1843 homicide case. At the age of 16, in 1843, Grace was convicted of killing her employer Thomas Kinnear (Paul Gross) and his housekeeper/lover, Nancy Montgomery (Anna Paquin). She was sentenced to death alongside fellow servant James McDermott but only McDermott ended up getting hanged. Grace claimed that she didn't remember anything concerning the murder and it led to a lot of confusion. Some argued that she was the main perpetrator of the act while others say she was coerced by McDermott.  After being held prisoner for 15 years at Ontario's Kingston Penitentiary, Grace recounts the story to Dr. Simon Jordan (Edward Holcroft), an Alienist  (ancient term for Psychologist/ Psychiatrist) who ...

The Deuce Season One Finale- "My Name is Ruby"

Image via hrapersbazzar.com Set in the early 1970's Times Square, New York, the Period Drama tells the story of how the porn industry began and its eventual legalization. The Deuce is filled with so many rich characters and I fell in love with the show from the first episode. The writing is fantastic and so is the cast. My favorite is James Franco playing twin brothers Vincent & Frankie who both work for the Mob. Maggie Gyllenhal plays Eileen/Candy, a sex worker who eventually goes into the porn industry as an actress. She plays this role so well and at the end of the day, you're left praying that she really gets what she's looking for. The pimps  are as ruthless as ever and you can see how they hold so much over the girls that they find it so hard to leave. The Deuce explores the themes of violence, drug abuse, misogyny, racism and corruption.        So much went down in the finale and it ended with a shocker. It was really intense and filled ...

Review- Happy Death Day (2017)

Image via imdb.com Happy Death Day is about Tree (Jessica Rothe), a typical sorority girl who isn't so nice to a lot of people. On her birthday, she wakes up in the dorm room of the guy she left a party with and before the end of the day, Tree is murdered by a weird person wearing a very creepy baby mask. The day keeps resetting and she keeps getting killed by the same person. It takes a toll on her body and she gets weaker each time. Tree has to find out who her killer is so she could stop the person and live to see a new day.  Image via imdb.com I was so hyped about Happy Death Day because Slasher movies can be fun to watch and I'm so glad they didn't disappoint with the content. Jessica Rothe was perfect for this role and I love how her character developed as the movie progressed. You hate her at the beginning but you start to feel really bad for her and wish she would find her killer. Even though the day kept repeating, it never became dull. The phases ...

Review- Geostorm (2017)

Image via imdb.com The governments of the world unite to create a program named "Dutch Boy" which surrounds the planet and is designed to save earth from natural disasters. After three years of protecting the planet, something goes wrong and it's left to two estranged brothers to solve the problem before a world wide geostorm occurs. After watching the trailer for Geostorm, I already knew what was going to happen. It's the same with most disaster films, but I saw it anyway. It's filled with so much CGI that I started having headaches from all the lights and explosions. Although,  I'll admit that the special effects were really good. I don't think there's any point making more disaster films because they all end up being the same, nothing new or out of the ordinary. The worst thing about Geostorm was the storyline which was filled with really terrible dialogues that would only make you laugh out loud and wonder why they made these actors star...

Review- Body Language (2017)

Add caption Body Language follows Nick (Ramsey Nouah), a very mysterious man who comes into the life of a stripper, Tola (Tana Adelana) around the same time a serial killer is murdering people. I'm a huge fan of Nouah and to be honest, I saw this film mostly because he starred in it. There were so many scenes that could have easily been cut out of the movie and at a point, the slow motion became too much. Body Language was filled with so many tiny mistakes that only made the film laughable. After Anita takes her bath to go to bed, there's still a visible amount of makeup on her face. The same goes for Tola, she also went to bed completely made up. I'm still wondering when Nollywood will get this right. In the office scene with Nick, Tola mentioned that she had a fiancé but when they have dinner days later, Nick asks her if she had a boyfriend or fiancé. Body Language was predictable until the point where the killer was revealed. I honestly didn't see that coming ...
